Miro Point, Jaco

Those of you who read my personal blog might remember me talking about Miro Point. Miro point is a lookout on the southwest face of Miro Mountain which looks out over Jaco Beach. Describing how to get to it isn’t all that easy, so I will attach a link which will give you a bit more information on the area itself, as well as a little map.

Having done that I will say that, Miro Point is a local landmark which is used as a hiking trail, as well as tourist destination. Some friends told me about it and although I don’t know the full story behind it…the short version is that someone was building a big beautiful structure (as well as some decorative walls and arches on the way up the road before it) and at some point they ran out of cash. The building, which is listed on the site above as a house, seems much to large and extravagant for that to me.

I think perhaps it was going to be a hotel or B&B. Either way, it’s well worth a visit.

My friends invited me along because they had heard about it and thought I would be interested. The first section of the hike is basically a steep incline along a partially paved roadway. There are some really interesting flora and fauna to look at and occasionally, a beautiful glimpse out over the hillside through the trees.

I’m not really a hiker but I was able to do the hill with relative ease although I was overheated and out of breath when I finally arrived at our destination. I’m sure part of that is due to the fact that it was full summer in Costa Rica at the time.

What I found quite interesting is that the entrance to the ruins is unmarked and unassuming…

The first batch of photos is all about the walk up the hill… the very last photo shows where the road branches off onto a narrow pathway that eventual leads to the ruins themselves…

This next batch of photos is all about the ruins themselves. Note that for the most part, all that was completed was a set of terraced balconies. There are however, some small rooms below the level of the last terrace. To my mind it looks as if they were meant to be bathrooms or change rooms, perhaps some storage.

I’m told that the local art students come in every couple of years, cover up the old graffiti and do some fresh paintings.

It was fascinating to spend an hour or so poking my head into every nook and cranny and looking for hidden art.

It is interesting to note that at certain times of the year (when the surrounding vegetation isn’t as lush), you can go to the southern end of Jaco beach and see the balconies jutting out from the jungle.

It is also important to note that I spent my day sniffing every flower and brushing up against unknown foliage…and ended up with a full face rash a day or two later. Obviously something didn’t agree with me. Don’t do what I did!

Toodles for now and Pura Vida!
