The Wonderful World Underwater...

So it’s been a busy couple of weeks at Joy Ride Sailing…and that’s awesome because summer is here in full swing, the sun is shining and the Mantas are jumping.

Yesterday we got the trifecta. Mantas, a dolphin and even some distant whale breaches.

That’s not my topic of choice for today though. Today we’re going to talk about fish. Now that we have moved our snorkeling spot over to Playa Fantasia, we are seeing many more types of fish and I decided that it made sense to do a little research into what types of fish live in the shallow waters of our Pacific Coast.

These appear to be the sort of fish that sport fishermen go after in the shallow waters, but there are so many other types of fish to see when snorkeling…

Our guests have seen Sargent Majors, like this

Parrot fish, like this fella… (click the link to read more about parrot fish)

Puffer fish, which are cool because they puff up when you get nearby… (click the link for more info)

…and many many more, as well as the occasional sea turtle, manta ray and lobster. I found this cool picture to help me show you…

Costa Rica really is an amazing place to explore the natural wonders that are all around us. Back home in the towns and cities, it’s easy to forget that we are only a small portion of the world’s living population but here where there is life EVERYWHERE and that life is bright and loud and colourful… you can’t help but notice, and be amazed.

Of course, mother nature is fickle and so are her minions (for lack of a better word)… sometimes, like yesterday, we see all sorts of things in the water, and overhead (like macaws and frigate birds), sometimes it feels like we are all alone with the wind and the waves.

You really never can tell, and that’s part of what makes it exciting. I don’t think I will ever stop getting excited when I see a fin approaching, or the white flash of a manta’s belly. I certainly hope I don’t…. and I hope that you get a chance to experience that excitement and that sense of wonder.

Meanwhile, I smell bacon cooking so I had better go before the drool lands on my laptop.

Toodles for now and Pura Vida!
